Guernésiais, a form of Norman, and also known as Dgèrnésiais, is spoken on Guernsey, one of the Channel Islands. According to a 2001 census 1,327 people in Guernsey spoke Guernésiais fluently, and several hundred more understood it. Many fluent speakers are over 50. There is no standard way of writing Guernésiais and there are many variations in spelling. A rich tradition of poems and songs in Guernésiais exists, inspired by the sea, characters from folklore and by nature.
